Tobermory - 2025
Tobermory is the capital of the Isle of Mull in the Scottish Inner Hebrides. As with many coastal towns, people lived there for over a thousand years before it was founded as a fishing port, and in the 18th century the layout was designed by the famous engineer Thomas Telford. He was so prolific as engineer of road and canal projects, that during his lifetime he was dubbed the ‘Colossus of Roads’. Fraser latterly worked in Scotland in a similar fishing port, and was drawn to painting a location where the beauty of the environment juxtaposed with the harshness of working conditions for many fishermen. Fraser also studied at a community college named after the great Thomas Telford and was trained as a fishmonger when he left school.
