- This painting was inspired by a visit to Muir Woods. The impressionist nature of the painting was intended to be evocative of famous films shot in this location in California redwood forests. Fraser has a deep fondness for the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy, and the filmmakers were denied permission to shoot in Muir Woods before they decided to set filming in New Zealand. The grand Scottish buck is depicted as an anachronistic homage to the forest’s previously numerous deer denizens. However, the piece is intended to spur imagination and retain the soft edges of a fantasy scene.
